Southwold in Suffolk has recently unveiled a new town sign made by local architectural metalworkers Chris Topp & Co, who have workshops in Carlton Husthwaite and Tholthorpe, following an open competition. The sign was designed by a local Southwold resident Brian Webb, who took on the challenge of designing a sign with a difference. The 3.5 metre high sign was inspired by the sea, the fishing industry, the buildings and by the fine architectural ironware that can be found in the town. Suffolk has a rich tradition in blacksmith made signs and the plan from the earliest design ideas was to make a metal sign. For a sign of this size and complexity and to meet the budget, a high tech solution was needed. We used a high pressure water-jet, which can cut with pencil line precision to create most of the sign and then added a handmade life size seagull to the top.
Chris Topp & Co Ltd, founded in 1980 started as blacksmiths, specialising in ancient ironwork, have expanded to become prominent in the world of high quality architectural metalwork. Keep up to date with the latest ProjectBook articles and blogs with our RSS feeds and subscribe to our newsletter.
