The NHIG Launch at Hampton Court Palace

Posted by James Mott on 4th August 2010.

The 20th July 2010 saw the launch of the National Heritage Ironwork Group (NHIG). Hosted at Hampton Court Palace the event was a great success with an excellent attendance from many top UK blacksmiths and Heritage Organisations including The National Trust, English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces.

The day started with an address from Adrian Phillips, Surveyor of the Fabric, Historic Royal Palaces followed by a series of short presentations from conservation specialists and members of the NHIG.

The morning’s talks addressed a range of subjects, which highlighted the aims of the NHIG, and endeavoured to raise awareness of the need for developing and promoting good practice in the heritage ironwork sector.

In the afternoon, the delegates were taken on a tour of Hampton Court, to view the notable wrought ironwork to be found in the palace and its grounds, most notably the Tijou screens. This was followed by an engaging demonstration of Repoussé by Paul Allen which was a highlight for many at the event.

The NHIG also announced the new Heritage Lottery Fund Blacksmith Bursary project. The NHIG’s bursary training project will make a difference to the heritage ironwork sector as a whole, by making these traditional skills more widely available.

This will be the first specialised programme for Blacksmith Conservators, providing new advanced training opportunities in a heritage sector which is currently under-represented in both education and standards.

From a small group of volunteers working diligently to promote high standards of workmanship, conservation and repair of heritage ironwork, the launch at Hampton Court has been a vital step in the NHIG’s journey to achieving their goals and was celebrated by all as a great success.
