Abinger Stained Glass, The Home of Stained Glass in The Heart of the Surrey Hills. Our studio nestles in the beautiful countryside of the North Downs at Abinger Hammer, Surrey. We specialise in bespoke commissioned work and also have extensive experience with restoring historical stained glass.
Repair and Restoration
We carry out all repair and restoration work on stained glass and leaded lights. We love to bring your sad old leaded lights back to life and give them another 100 years of service! The lead has a life of approximately 100 years depending on where the window is situated. In a busy door way, constantly opening and closing, it may be less. You can easily tell if your windows need T.L.C if they rattle when tapped or if they are bowed. We can also carry out simple repairs in situ. One single broken piece does not always mean the whole panel has to be removed.
About Us
I am Amanda Winfield. In 1980 I attended Medway College Of Art and Design for a year’s Foundation course in Art and went on to Chelsea School of Art, London to study for 3 years in Mural Design and Public Art. This course was fantastic, a mixed media fine art based course which allowed us to study printmaking, textile design, fine art painting and drawing, technical drawing, sculpture and of course glass.
I left Chelsea in 1984 and was very lucky to secure a job as assistant to Set Designer Tom McPhillips who went on to found the company Atomic Design in the States. What great training, we designed sets for bands on tour, shows in the theatre and work for television including children’s TV and advertisements. As assistant to Tom I learnt so much about working to deadlines, striving for the best for the customer, realising the design and how to enjoy work!
In the spring of 1986 I joined Goddard & Gibbs Studios in London as a trainee. When I left Goddard & Gibbs in 2002 I was their Studio Manager, responsible for all the stained glass work that came through their studios.
Mannon Lloyd joined me in 2007 and has a background in printmaking, she is learning the art and craft of stained glass on an informal apprenticeship and is proving to be a valued member of my small team. On site work is carried out by John Mahoney who has 30 years experience all around the world, of fitting both historical stained glass into stone and new commissioned art glass. And of course it helps that I've known him for 25 of those years so know exactly how he works!
Norman Attwood carries out our figurative stained glass painting. Having trained at William Morris and Co we are very lucky to have such a fine and brilliant stained glass painter on the team.
Courses in Glass
I love to pass on my skills, so teach glass courses regularly. All my students know that I am always available for free advice or help, and I have a few who visit me now on a regular basis which is great.
With lovely views over the landscape from the workshop, and a very warm welcome, it is a wonderful retreat where learning the art and craft of stained glass is carried out in an informal and inspiring atmosphere.
I teach a maximum of 3 students at a time.
In 2010 I have introduced a 2 day course called The Next Step.
This course is designed for those who have already carried out a one day course or similar. We explore further the joys of stained glass. Basic painting, fusing and acid etching skills are taught and the piece you make can be as big as 500mm x 500mm.
