About

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) is Britain’s oldest conservation charity, with around 8,500 members from all walks of life. Founded by William Morris in 1877 to combat destructive and over-zealous Victorian enthusiasm for restoration rather than repair, today SPAB continues to offer advice, education and expertise to building professionals and home owners. SPAB’s diverse membership includes many organisations numbered among The National Federation of Builders.

SPAB is the champion of the building, representing thepractical andpositive side of conservation, with a firm set of principles about how old buildings should be repaired and the practical knowledge to demonstrate how these principles should be applied.

Through its acclaimed Scholarship scheme for architects and building surveyors and parallel Fellowship scheme for building craftsmen and women, SPAB is helping to trainthe next generation to care for old buildings with skill and discernment. The organisation also runs regular courses for building professionals and these are targeted to reflect current issues and themes of interest to those working with the historic built environment.

Throughcourses, publications, pamphlets and technical advice, SPAB also helps and advises many people simply who own or live in an old building. The organisation run regular events for homeowners covering a range of topics and can also offer bespoke events for professionals.

SPAB’s core activities include:

·          Casework: SPAB plays a formal role in the planning system and must be notified of all applications to demolish listed buildings in England and Wales. In this role we concentrate on pre-Georgian buildings at risk.

·          Advice: Our technical helpline (0207 456 0916) answers thousands of enquiries each year on every aspect of repairing old buildings. We also produce a wide range of highly regarded technical publications.

·          Training: Many of the most famous buildings in Britain are cared for by some of the several thousand people who have received SPAB training. Our twice-yearly six-day Repair Course for professionals seeking to understand the principles of conservative repair is an acknowledged leader in the field.

·          Mills:  An independent section within the society is devoted to care and preservation of historic mills.

·          Faith in Maintenance is SPAB’s unique HLF-backed scheme to bring free training to the volunteers of all faith communities throughout the country who care for a historic place of worship.
