About

Who we are
  • FAME began life as the Standing Conference of Archaeological Unit Managers (SCAUM). In 2008 it changed it's name to FAME to reflect more accurately our purpose and membership.
  • FAME was established in 1975, and since then has been the only organisation which exists solely to represent and support employers in commercial archaeological organisations.
  • FAME represents a broad spectrum of archaeological organisations
  • FAME represents archaeological employers throughout the United Kingdom
  • FAME represents the interests of archaeology in the business world
FAME represents the interests of archaeology to the government and the public.

What does FAME do?

  • We represent the views of archaeological employers
  • We promote professional practice in archaeology
  • We support the promotion and improvement of training and development
  • We negotiate with other organisations to promote best practice
  • We help to create and sustain the conditions in which archaeological businesses can thrive
  • We are a member of the Historic Environment Forum
  • We promote debate and the dissemination of policy and practice in archaeology
  • We provide guidance and assistance to our members.
  • We publish the Employment Practice Manual and the Health and Safety in Field Archaeology Manual, both updated in 2006, and both only available through the “members only” section of our website.

Our Aims

  • To provide advice and support to our members
  • To provide a forum in which the range of opinion on current questions of concern to archaeological managers can be established.
  • To encourage the adoption amongst its members of the best professional practices in employment, fieldwork and publication; and

To promote the preservation of the archaeological resource, whether by conservation or record, in the interests of the community now and in the future.
