About Us The Suffolk Craft Society was formed in 1970 to promote the value and importance of contemporary crafts and to support individual craftspeople in the creation of their work. The Society supports 150 members with a wide variety of craft skills. The Society is best known for the summer exhibition of its member’s work it organises in Aldeburgh each year. The society also seeks to promote and sell members work through the Society run Gallery 2 in Ipswich Town Hall Galleries. Over the years occasional one-off events have been organised and smaller show case displays. The overriding aims of the society are
The abiding value of membership is being part of a network of shared interests and commitment. The society seeks to enhance maker’s status in the cultural sector and to share their experience with other makers and find a sympathetic audience to show their endeavours. A more tangible benefit is one of promoting and marketing member’s work while supporting the development of their creative work. Members have an entry in the Members Directory on the website. This website has the capability to sell members work over the Internet. The society is well placed to act as a broker to promote and negotiate the commissioning of craftwork for its members. A society Newsletter is produced three times a year. The society aims to be able to offer the membership professional development support, particularly in areas of business and marketing advice with the possibility of creative mentoring for newer members.
Education The Suffolk Craft Society Members and Friends strongly support the concept that education in the arts is vitally important to all and is therefore developing an ongoing educational programme in the county. Appreciation of the arts, particularly in young people, opens the door to an expanding intellectual horizon. For many this is not just life-enhancing, but can be a life-changing experience. The society with its wealth of quality makers is ideally placed to facilitate education of the highest order. As a membership-run organisation our commitment to education is shown by our support of an education officer and we urge partners and other organisations to make contact so together we can ensure a strong future for craft and innovative artistic making. The Society offers professional residencies, workshops and demonstrations for schools, colleges and adult groups in the following disciplines: Ceramics, Jewellery, Textiles, Print-making, Calligraphy, Spinning and dyeing, Stained glass and Sculpture.
