Authentic Recreation of Adam's Colours at Kenwood

Kenwood House

Investigation of the Entrance Hall revealed a very interesting story. The original Dining Parlour designed for Lord Mansfield by Robert Adam c.1771 was found to be too small for entertaining guests. Accounts for the period reveal that Adam speedily revised his plans for the decoration and fitting out of the Entrance Hall for occasional use as a Dining Room. Decorative details were altered to include allusions to Bacchus and Ceres, vine leaves were carved on the marble fireplace. Paint research revealed that the walls of the room were painted in light grey with striking Prussian blue coloured doors. The ceiling was painted in ‘two greens and a purple’.

The research findings provided new insights into eighteenth-century taste. This original scheme was recreated in 1995 using lead white paint tinted with authentic pigments. Blue Verditer for the mixed green of the ceiling was manufactured in English Heritage’s own laboratories. The redecoration of the Entrance Hall has been hailed as the most accurate reconstruction of an Adam scheme.""
