Introduction to Historic Interiors Research & Conservation (HIRC)
Historic Interiors Research & Conservation (HIRC) aims to help the owners and managers of historic interiors understand the properties in their care, enjoy the insights they provide about their past, and make informed decisions about their future.
For the past 25 years Helen Hughes has been conducting research in a variety of historic structures which have ranged from royal palaces, country villas to underground bunkers and bridges.
Combining detailed on-site detective work with documentary investigation, and the scientific examination of applied paint layers and painting materials, offers a fresh way of examining interiors. It is possible to establish in great detail how rooms were originally decorated and fitted out. This study provides an insight into the tastes and aspirations of the creators of these rooms, and helps explain how and why they were altered by later occupants. These interiors are silent witnesses – and hold hidden stories which help to inform their future management.
