The World War II Tunnels of Dover Castle

Dover Castle – The World War II Tunnels

The Cliff Casemates were constructed between 1797-8 to provide accommodation for the troops garrisoned at the castle during the Napoleonic Wars and were in use during the 19th & 20th centuries. It has been decided to focus the new interpretation of the site on the 1939 Dunkirk Rescue Operations which were directed from these underground tunnels.

The Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle are very popular with visitors. English Heritage is seeking to review the presentation to improve the visitor experience and commissioned HIRC to conduct a survey of the existing applied decorations which dated from the late 18th century up until the Cold War era.
